The fungus, called dermophytes, thrives on the nail’s protein makeup, called keratin. Nail fungus starts as an infection underneath the toenail, turning the nail yellow or brown and often lifting the nail bed, causing it to split. A nail bed injury opens up the possibility of all types of infections. Often fungal nails are accompanied by a second bacterial or yeast infection, which can make it painful to walk or run.
