Nick Salter's career may be in jeopardy.
The Port Adelaide forward was considered lucky to have retained his spot on the Power's list after failing to play a single AFL game last season. After feeling pain in his "good" foot, the team announced that Salter has several stress fractures in his foot and will be out eight weeks rehabbing.
Port Adelaide football operations manager Peter Rohde said after the initial announcement, "He's been to a second specialist because his other foot has been getting sore. He's had some pain for a couple of weeks so we're waiting for a report so we can find out exactly what the problem is."
Salter, 25, played just five SANFL games last season after suffering stress fractures in the pre-season on the same foot he had surgery on in 2011. He has been placed on the long-term injury list.
"It's really disappointing for Salts given his history (with injury) at this early stage of the year, he can't get a run at it but the reality is that in elite sport setbacks will happen," Port director of coaching and strategy Alan Richardson told the team's website.
"He will just focus on his rehab and once match-fit he'll still have an opportunity to play a significant role for the team given he'll be back early in the season," Richardson said.
The Power has tried to turn Salter into a key defender, but he has played just 21 AFL games since debuting in 2008.
