Florida basketball has had a terrible time staying healthy this season, with all of their seven most used players sustaining one injury or another. Yet they have still managed a Top 10 ranking and are No. 1 in the SEC standings.
Erik Murphy has seen his fair share of injuries this season, sustaining broken ribs in the game against Air Force, and now he sprained his ankle against Mississippi State on Saturday. With just five minutes left to go in Florida's victory over the Bulldogs, he limped off the court during play and went to the locker room to be evaluated.
The team is saying that Murphy is "fine"; he played in Tuesday night's win over No. 25 Kentucky, scoring 10 points. But as we've seen in the past, simple sprains, bumps, bruises, and stress fractures can turn into something more serious, especially with a national title on the line.
Murphy sat out what was to be his homecoming game of sorts against Yale (Murphy is a Rhode Island native) with the broken ribs, an injury that was not announced until eight days after it occurred. If the team is keeping mum about injuries like this, who is to know how serious Murphy's "tweaked" ankle really is. The team is already without Will Yeguette, who had season ending knee surgery several weeks ago.
We'll see how things progress.
