It’s amazing how the tiny edge of a nail can cause such extreme pain as in the case of an ingrown toenail. At Connecticut Foot Care Centers, we find that patients are often reluctant to come one of our six Hartford and Middlesex County offices to get relief from an ingrown nail because they are afraid of how much it will hurt. In nearly every instance, patients in far less pain than when they arrived after one of our podiatrists Jeffrey S. Kahn, D.P.M., Craig M. Kaufman, D.P.M., Ayman M. Latif, D.P.M. Raffaella R. Below are some tips to help prevent and relieve ingrown toenails.


Do: trim nails properly. This is the number one cause of ingrown toenails. Cut the nails short but not so short that the skin can overlap the nail, encouraging an ingrown nail to form.

Don’t: file toenails with rounded edges. Always file straight across.

Don’t: wear shoes and socks that too tight. When toes are pressed up against each other for long periods of time, ingrown nails are more likely to develop. High heels that force the foot forward also cramp toes together and can increase the risk for this condition.

Don’t: attempt “bathroom surgery” and try to dig the nail out with a sharp instrument. This most often leads to injury and infection. “Folk remedies” such as sticking a piece of cotton under the nail or cutting a notch out of the side of the nail are also bad ideas.

Do: contact us if the nail is red, warm to the touch, oozing pus and/or if you have a fever, as these are signs that an infection is present and medical attention is needed immediately.

An issue we see here at Connecticut Foot Care Centers all the time is ingrown toenails. Unfortunately, a lot of the times a patient has taken it upon themselves to treat the issue with a home remedy that they read on the internet or that their mom’s aunt’s best friend’s sister’s pet parakeet told them. 

Before you attempt to treat an ingrown toenail at home, make sure you’re not using one of these methods!

  • Myth #1: Cutting a notch in the side of your nail’s border will stop the nail from growing inward.


  • Myth #2: Shoving a piece of cotton between the nail and the bed will prevent it from growing any longer.


  • Myth #3:Just keep trimming! If you keep trimming down the sides of the nail, it will eventually even out.


And now for the truth:

The number one treatment is prevention. The best way to prevent your nails from becoming ingrown is to trim them properly. Properly trimming means straight across, and not too short, and not rounding off the edges. Prevention also includes making sure your shoes fit properly. If your toe box is too tight, it will compress your toes which can cause a painful ingrown toenail.

If you do have an ingrown toenail however, you can try soaking the affected toe in warm water several times a day and try to gently massage the nail out of the skin. If you notice redness, pus or discharge, swelling, or heat in the area, this means it is infected and it is time call your podiatrist!

Why it’s important:

Ingrown toenails are a foot condition that causes the toenails to dig into the surrounding skin. This can not only be an inconvenience but also be a cause of systemic discomfort. Ingrown Toenails can be caused by improper toenail trimming where they are cut too short. When the toenail’s corners are cut so that they curve with the toe, the sides of that toenail begin to grow into the skin surrounding the toe. Another cause for this condition can be wearing shoes that ate too narrow or tight. The big toes are the ones that generally develop this condition. At first, the toe begins to harden and swell due to the ingrown toenail. Thereafter, it can get inflamed or infected. If left untreated, the skin around the toe can begin to grow over it.

If it gets infected, treatment can include soaking it in warm and soapy water and wedging something in between the ingrown nail and skin to prevent it from digging into the skin. Antibiotics may also be required to combat the infection when the above methods are not successful. Moreover, utilizing clean socks or sandals can breathe new life into your toenails. 

When the above is still not helpful, a surgical procedure may be necessary to remove part of the ingrown toenail. The medical professional performing this procedure will try their best not to remove the entire nail, as doing so could cause it to come back again. It generally takes up to 4 months for the toenail to regrow once removed.

Well-tended feet are the essential foundation of the active lifestyle necessary for long-term health and well-being. Neglecting your feet can create unnecessary discomfort throughout your body.  Here are ten tips from Connecticut Foot Care Centers, LLC to make sure that your feet remain pain-free for many years to come.



  1. Avoid ingrown toenails buy trimming them straight across with a clipper, rather than a razor.
  2. If you enjoy the occasional salon pedicure, make sure that the facility is clean and that instruments are sterilized. Do not allow the technician to use a razor on your feet at any time.
  3. Wash your feet daily with warm water and plenty of soap. Be sure to dry your feet well and pay attention to the spaces between your toes. Fungus thrives in moist environments.
  4. Wear shower shoes when you visit locker rooms and public pools. Bacteria abound in such environments.
  5. Minimize sweat and keep feet dry In wool or cotton socks. Change damp socks as soon as possible. Perspiration can create a moist environment hospitable to fungi.
  6. Check your feet weekly, noting problems or changes. If you have diabetes, check your feet more frequently, as diabetics experience foot sores and infections more frequently than others. Be alert to potential problems.
  7. Consider investing in new footwear. Shoes made of leather allow air to circulate so feet can “breathe.” Shoes made of newer mesh fabrics are a great option if you tend toward sweaty feet.
  8. Shoes that are too tight or too loose can lead to long-term foot problems. See a professional for a proper fitting. Choose a broad, wide shoe with a wide, low heel. Pointy shoes and stiletto heels are fashionable, but wearing them too often isn’t a good idea. They can squeeze your toes, causing ingrown toenails, bunions, and other problems.
  9. Don’t share shoes, socks, or other items that touch the feet. In situations where you must share, such as renting bowling shoes, be sure everything is treated with antibacterial spray.
  10. See a podiatrist when a problem arises. Your podiatrist has years of training and experience and is the best doctor to diagnose and treat all of your foot and ankle issues.
