The injury happened during the fifth inning on Monday in the game against the Diamondbacks when Gordon scored from second on a two-run single by Carl Crawford. Gordon beat the throw home, but collided with catcher Miguel Montero. Montero didn't seem fazed by the impact, but the 160-pound Gordon lay on the ground for a few seconds before heading to the dugout.
Manager Don Mattingly said that he was planning on taking Gordon out of the lineup soon after anyway, and Gordon is listed as day-to-day with a left ankle sprain. Gordon is known for his speed, so it is likely he will be kept out of the lineup until he is up and running again (har har!).
It is unlikely Gordon will make the club anyway, since he only plays shortstop and Hanley Ramirez is the starting shortstop. Gordon however has enjoyed bonus playing time while Ramirez is playing in the World Baseball Classic. During this time he has been more relaxed at the plate with increases in walks and on-base percentage. Ramirez jammed his thumb during the WBC Tuesday and could miss anywhere from two to ten weeks.
