Summer is speeding by and at Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care Specialists we know that schools will soon be calling young athletes back for pre-season sports practices. If your child has had a less-than-active summer, now is the time to help them start to prepare for the upcoming sport season. Going back cold turkey can greatly increase the risk of injuries.
Below are some tips on getting ready for fall sports:
Get moving—if this summer’s main activity has been video games, you’ll want to get your child moving and active in the remaining weeks of the summer. Encourage them to walk, run, bike or do other activities that will raise their heart rate, as well as stretching and conditioning as it pertains to their particular sport. Injuries such as Achilles tendonitis and ankle sprains are often caused by going from zero to sixty on the activity meter. Two- to three-hour practices with sprints, hill running and other strenuous activities can be disastrous for your feet and legs if it’s preceded by a long period of inactivity.
Do a shoe check—the way children’s feet grow there’s a good chance you will need to purchase new sports shoes before the season begins. For the best fit, go to a fitness shoe store and have your child’s foot professionally measured. If your child is starting a new sport, it’s wise to purchase shoes designed for that sport. Different sports require different types of movement of the foot and today’s shoes are made to support and accommodate the specific actions associated with a sport or activity.
