Corns happen when pressure is placed on the foot, causing it to become out of balance and thereby adding resistance in an abnormal manner that’s localized on a specific area of the foot. Due to this focused area of abnormal pressure, thick areas of skin are formed on the feet to act as padding in these small areas which are hard corns. When the pressure of a corn results in swelling, pain occurs. Soft corns can form between toes because the skin in that location is moist. Corns can be symptomatic of other foot complications. Corns can happen from badly fitting footwear, in the elderly because of the reduced natural padding in their feet or spending extended amounts of time on the feet. Treatment may involve having a medical professional removing the dead skin layers to access the corn. Padding will thereafter be used to redistribute weight evenly to relieve pressure. Proper footwear is a must during recovery and for long term foot and ankle health. Due to the nature of corns to cause unwanted and nagging pain, they may put a damper on your stride.
